Happy 11th Anniversary: Sunny & Erik

We were so thrilled to check in with Sunny & Erik who were married way back in October of 2013 so they just very recently celebrated 11 years of marriage! We have very fond memories of their wedding so it was such a treat to get to revisit their photos, as well as hear how married life has been treating them. They were our first and only couple who married at Blue Ridge Overlook on Wintergreen Mountain! Even though we now get to photograph weddings on slightly bigger mountains, this Virginia overlook is truly spectacular with some of the best views of those famed Blue Ridge peaks. We were so happy to see that Sunny, a former model is racing stock cars again which she was doing at the time of their wedding, too. How cool is that?!

What challenges have you both faced & how did you handle them &/or learn from them? Have you had any unexpected joys?

Our challenges and unexpected joys are actually the same – we were surprised and blessed with identical twin girls after 4 years of marriage, and what a roller coaster of a few years that was! The girls are beautiful and wonderful, and luckily I went what is considered “full-term” with them, so they were born healthy. Our son was born not long after – they are only 18 months apart, so we felt like we had triplets for a while, which logistically and emotionally can be a huge challenge, but the silver lining is not only the immense love we have for our children but the strength it created in our marriage. Erik and I were simply “teammates” for a while, with diapers, feedings, and all the juggling that goes with the development of three little ones and that was ok, because our focus was on the kids, and now we have come out the other side of it stronger and able to focus on ourselves as well as our children.

Where has life found you since your wedding day?

We moved outside of Richmond to a rural county and we enjoy living in the country. My parents moved to the same county, so we luckily have them close by! I have resumed my love of motorsports by working for a sports car race team as well a picking up my own stock car racing again, which is my passion. Erik has been able to get back into fishing and we take the kids out on the boat alot.

What do you remember most about your wedding day when you look at your photos?

Erik says he remembers how happy our parents were. You can see the smile on my moms face and feel it. They were happy and proud. I remember how perfect it was. The day was just what I wished for a as a little girl, all my family and friends, on the side of a mountain, Puccini, in my mother’s fur stole, the leaves turned bright and beautiful for autumn, my dress, dancing with my father, my brother and my girlfriends! it was all perfect!

Have your little ones seen your wedding photos and if so, did they have any comments you wouldn’t mind sharing?

Yes, they have looked at the book, and it’s funny because the little white gloves that came with the album fit them perfectly! Finally, someone can wear those gloves! They don the gloves, turn the pages and point out all the people they know, that are still in our lives. They want to eat up the chocolate cake (one of the best we’ve ever had! -Ed.)! And they ask why people are throwing stuff at us? (birdseed was thrown instead of rice). We plan to vacation at the same resort this year.

I just wanted to let you know that Erik and I have commented often over the years that the money we spent with you and Bill was money well spent, it was the best decision we made about our wedding, it was the largest percentage of our budget, and it was SO worth it. We look at those photos every anniversary, and more with the kids now, but I can’t thank you enough for capturing those moments for us. It means a lot to me. Still.

Happiest of anniversaries to you S&E! You have such a beautiful family and we’re tickled pink that you and your kiddos love looking at your wedding photos so often! :)

Happy Anniversary: Tony & Laura

We’ve got one more one-year anniversary to share with you this season, and it’s with one of the sweetest couples we’ve had a chance to work with, Tony & Laura, whose relaxed and down-home wedding in Virginia’s horse country was a wonderful end to last year’s season. Of course we chatted recently to get their favorite moments from the day, and here’s what they told us.

We can’t believe it’s already been a year either. Since the wedding, we adopted a dog (an adorable 90-pound black lab mix named Zeus) and moved from Virginia into DC. The first year of married life has been wonderful, and it feels like it just keeps getting better.

Happy Anniversary: Kaitlyn & Mark’s Wedding at Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC

Fall is a popular time for weddings and 2013 was no different so we have another fun anniversary to share with you today! We’re thrilled to help celebrate Kaitlyn & Mark’s first anniversary with them and were thrilled to see some of their favorite moments that we captured from their truly stunning DC wedding. HUGE thank you again to the fabulous and extremely talented ladies at Evoke who helped make this such a fantastic and wonderfully memorable day for all involved!

Here are a few of our favorites from the wedding.  It’s hard to believe it has been a year.  Thank you again for taking the great pictures.  It has been a great year and very busy. We are keeping it simple for our first anniversary and going to a nice dinner in DC.  We just bought a house in Raleigh, NC and are in the process of packing and moving so we thought this weekend would be a good break.

Happy Anniversary: Lauren & Chas’s Wedding at Fat Cat Farms

Last fall was gorgeous in Virginia, when we celebrated Lauren & Chas’s wedding at Fat Cat Farms (so was the prior year when we did their engagement session, for that matter). We’re happy to include a selection of their favorite moments from their celebration, and are glad to see all their new life adventures together. We love these two!

We had a pretty exciting first year of marriage – culminating with the celebration of our anniversary about 10 days early with the arrival of a daughter – Beatrice Virginia. We got to celebrate again on our ACTUAL anniversary when we ventured out with her for an Italian dinner (we went to Italy on our honeymoon)… which Bea kindly slept through! While preparing for a baby definitely had its stressful moments (you know, like assembling nursery furniture!) that you might not anticipate for “newlyweds,” we completely agree that it has made us an even better team and grown our love for each other in ways we could never have imagined!

Lauren’s favorites:

The big strangling hug from Chas’s best friend from high school reminds me of how incredibly loved we felt by everyone who made it to Charlottesville for the wedding

On our 1 year anniversary, I asked Chas what his top 3 moments of the previous year were, and he named this – hearing my dress swish as I walked up behind him for him to see me for the first time. It was one of my favorite moments, too! I remember being so excited – not nervous as all, just really excited, to have him see me and hug me.

Chas’s favorite:

Chas calls this my “ugly cry face” – and for that reason, it wouldn’t have been one of my top choices for a frame in our entryway! But he says he likes the face (and the picture) it because it shows how passionate I am. And now he says our daughter makes it!

Our favorite:

Chas likes it because it proves I was ON the dance floor (I am a terrible dancer). I like it because it proves I wasn’t really dancing – just kissing and enjoying my bourbon!

Congratulations, you two!

Happy Anniversary: Sam & Casey’s Wedding at Panorama Farms

We’ve got some great anniversary celebrations with you this week, starting with friends Sam and Casey. Sam, you might remember, worked diligently with us here at Holland Photo Arts World HQ, doing image processing and general Photoshop magic. They recently shared a little of their first year of marriage along with their favorite moments from the day’s festivities.
The biggest news from our first year of marriage is that we adopted a puppy in February. He keeps us very busy and entertained! He is very sweet and cuddly, only 6 pounds but a lot of personality, and quickly became an integral part of our family. His name is Clooney (he came with that name, but we decided it fit him so we kept it!) and he will be a year old in a few days. Below is a picture of the three of us that Casey’s dad took recently.

In terms of pictures, well, it is really hard to pick favorites, they’re all so great!

We love that it perfectly captures real smiles from both of us and how happy we were (and I’m so glad we had a first look where we could do this before everything got hectic!)

A few of Sam’s favorites:

I just think it’s a gorgeous picture, and I remember how nervous I was and my dad made me laugh and helped me relax a bit (but not completely 🙂 )

I love how happy and comfortable Casey looks – I was so nervous that I said some of my vows to our feet, but Casey was so calm and confident the whole time and was really able to just enjoy the moment.

I think that this one to me represents our friendship – we were friends for almost 4 years before we started dating, we are best friends and love to make each other laugh.

A few of Casey’s favorites:

I love the combination of family love and weird faces in this picture.

This is such a perfect picture of the moment of the ceremony.

This picture represents how happy we were AND how happy we were to finally be married and how relieved we were.

Happy anniversary, you two!

Happy 11th Anniversary: Anne & Greg

Continuing in our series of celebrating 10 year + anniversaries of some of our former clients, we take great joy in getting to celebrate Anne & Greg’s 10th anniversary. Anne & Greg married in Charlottesville way back in May of 2003 and their wedding at the Boar’s Head Inn was one of our first events there! A lot of things have changed there over the years, but one thing that hasn’t, is our warm memories of their wedding day. We’re thrilled that we get to keep up with their adventures on FB and watch their cuties, Nora & Jason grow.

(Below; a few photos from their wedding in a collage that we used to put on the blog (yes, we started blogging back in 2004!) and as the first page in their proof catalog. Oh, yes, times sure have changed.)

Anne-Greg collage

We checked in with A&G recently to see if they wouldn’t mind giving us an update on what they’ve been up to and how married life has been treating them.

– What challenges have you both faced & how did you handle them &/or learn from them?

The biggest challenge we faced was when Greg was deployed to the Sinai Peninsula with the US Army for a year. It was shortly after our third anniversary. That year was a challenge. We both spent the year focusing on our individual careers and communicating with each other when we could, mostly through email. In the end, it made us appreciate each other even more than we previously had.

– Have you had any unexpected joys?

When we got married, Anne was a cat-person, and Greg was a dog-person. During our first year of marriage, Anne won the debate and we got a cat. Greg unexpectedly learned that he liked cats. A few years later, Greg wore Anne down and we got a dog. Anne unexpectedly learned that she liked dogs. And we both learned that it is possible to be both a cat- and a dog-person!

– Where has life found you since your wedding day? (career, home location, family status, etc.)

After our wedding day, Greg continued to serve in the U.S. Army as a physical therapist. Anne went to law school and became a tax lawyer. We have moved a few times, but now live in Richmond, Virginia, where Anne is a tax specialist for Dominion Resources, Inc., and Greg serves as a physical therapist in the U.S. Army Reserves and is also a stay-at-home dad. We have two kids: Jason (age 4) and Nora (almost age 2).

– What do you remember most about your wedding day when you look at your photos?

Above all, our wedding pictures make us feel very happy! They really capture the joy of the day. (And it makes Anne remember when she tossed the bouquet over the heads of all the ladies and it was caught by a tall guy standing behind them!)

– Have your children seen your wedding photos and if so, have they had any comments you don’t mind sharing?

They have seen the photos we have framed on the wall. No comments… but they do recognize us even though we look a lot different 11 years later.

The most recent photo I could find of all four of us (attached) was from last November! It’s hard to get the kids to pose for pictures right now!

Thanks so much for being so gracious with your time, Anne & Greg! We’re thrilled to celebrate your 11th wedding anniversary with you, but honestly, we don’t think either one of you look that much different! Bet it’s those little ones that are keeping you young. Or maybe it’s beautiful, genteel Richmond? Either way, it’s working. Congratulations to you both and it was great to hear from you!

With Joy,

Happy anniversary: Ashley & Kevin

Happy anniversary: Ashley & Kevin

Indeed, we have some more one-year anniversaries to share with you this week, first up is Ashley & Kevin, whose wedding we photographed a year ago at the Army Navy Club. We love hearing which images capture their most memorable moments of the day (or are just pictures they love), and here’s what Ashley & Kevin had to share:

Kevin’s favorites:

Great photo of all the groomsmen together looking extremely stylish with the hats and glasses that really captured the theme.

Ashley’s favorites:

Our reactions to my brother’s toast summed up the day – tons of laughs and the best time ever!

My ladies! We had so much fun that day and we are all cracking up because the next photo is one of the groomsmen carrying the bags (below).

My mom and…

…my dad

Collective favorites:

Our first look- the first time we saw each other that day on the rooftop of the Lorien and Kevin surprised Ashley with a pearl bracelet!

We loved the backdrop of this photo!

It’s been an absolutely wonderful first year of marriage and celebrations of love. We were lucky enough to see a ton of our close friends get married this year – 7 couples who were at our wedding! On top of that Kevin started a new job, Ashley got promoted and we’re loving living in San Francisco. For our anniversary, we returned to the DC area and stayed at the Lorien Hotel & Spa (the hotel we stayed in for our wedding) in the suite with the rooftop deck where we had our first look. We’re hoping to do a big Europe trip in 2015 as a belated celebration too!

Congratulations, you two!

Happy anniversary: Alicia & Gio

Happy anniversary: Alicia & Gio

Quiet and at peace and solidarity with one another. That, for us, exemplifies Alicia & Gio, who just celebrated their first anniversary after their wedding celebration at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, DC. We couldn’t have been happier to photograph these two and all the moments, big and small, they shared with one another and with their families. Many clients really stick with us over time, and A&G are definitely one of those couples. We’re so happy to share in their anniversary with them.

Of course we recently asked them to select their favorite moments from the day and why, and here’s what they had to say.

Alicia’s expression in this photo sums up the excitement, eagerness, and joy we felt on the alter.  We were so happy, beaming at each other — we almost forgot there was anyone else in the church.

That’s right, Fr. Riffle, chuckle and avert your eyes; we’re savoring this long-awaited moment!

We loved this photo so much we used it as our 2013 Christmas card! It’s intimate and sweet.

This photo is a favorite because Bill caught us in a really organic pose–glowing just a short time after the ceremony. Gio looks so natural here. That’s the laugh I see every day at home, and I love that Bill captured it in this moment.

I love this photo. Gio and his mom had such a beautiful dance together, so there’s that. But I also think Gio’s face looks really sweet here, very him.

This shot is just something a little different. We love the lighting, the way it illuminates Gio’s face, the back of the dress. This was also right before our friends and family joined us on the dance floor for the best dance party ever.

(It’s funny that we chose a bunch of B + W photos, but we think we’d have liked them just as much in color!)

Congratulations, you two!

Happy anniversary: Mary Beth & Chris

Wow, how’d it get to be September already? This summer’s totally been flying by, but it’s not been without fun and catching up with old friends. One of them has been one of our wedding photography clients, the incredibly sweet Mary Beth & Chris, who previously wed at Shrine Mont in rural Virginia. They took a minute out of their schedules (amid a major move to another city) to share with us some of their favorite moments of the day and catch up with us a bit.

We can’t believe it’s been almost a year since our wedding- Wow! We’re going to Charleston, SC this weekend to celebrate our first anniversary and enjoy some time away just the two of us. Other updates about us in this past year….we brewed multiple batches of our own beer, MB turned 30 in April and we celebrated with friends in Austin Texas, we love gardening in our new big yard and are starting a compost pile, we moved to Richmond for MB’s new job as Director of Youth & Young Adults at St. James’s Episcopal Church and so Chris could go to school at VCU to pursue a career in nursing. Never a dull moment with Team Abplanalp!

Here are their favorite moments:

It was nice too hearing from Mary Beth’s parents, who offered up their own favorites from the day (in addition to the one of Mary Beth and her dad at top, an obvious choice, or in Mary’s words, “Duh. Awesome FOB and bride shot. AWESOME. :)”

That look of utter joy on Mary Beth is like the joy I’ve seen on her face since she was an infant. But this time, it’s amped up and on speed she’s so in love with Chris.

Shrine Mont is like Mary Beth’s (and now Chris’s) favorite place in the world—where love, faith, and peace collide. And there they are, married, walking hand in hand down the pathway of the rest of their lives together.

Congratulations, you two!

Happy anniversary: Tammy & Andrew

Happy anniversary: Tammy & Andrew

We’re working on a special treat–actually a series of treats–for you related to our clients’ anniversaries, especially now that we celebrated Holland Photo Arts’ own ten-year anniversary last year. So stay tuned…

In the meantime, we’re delighted to share Tammy & Andrew’s fave moments from their own wedding, held one year ago. We had so much fun with them on their wedding day, including a flash mob-style introduction to their reception. It was unique and so them, which is really all one could ask for. If you’re planning your wedding, what are you doing to make it your own?

From Tammy: The first year has been incredible (but has flown by!). We bought our dream house and are looking at getting a puppy :- )  For our anniversary we are going to the same bed and breakfast we went to after the wedding. We are planning on biking, hiking, and eating a lot. We have also found the best part of taking so long to put together the wedding album is we get to keep looking at the photos!

Happy anniversary: Elizabeth & Ryan

Happy anniversary: Elizabeth & Ryan

We’re back in the office for a spell after 6 flights and nearly 12,000 miles for recent weddings and a family portrait at an old amusement park. We can’t wait to share them with you–some really fun and poignant moments to come. In the meantime, we’re happy celebrating the one year anniversary with Elizabeth & Ryan, whose wedding we shot near Orange, Virginia last summer. Join us in congratulating this self-admittedly silly and fun couple, and see what they picked for their favorite moments from the day.

Joint favorite:

The scene is beautiful and classic. The shadowing creates a really interesting shot. We look calm and comfortable after the craziness of the morning. A beautiful moment all around.

Elizabeth’s faves:

This picture is a perfect example of our dynamic. I like to get a bit silly, followed with Ryan sometimes joining in, and sometimes trying to tone me down.  This time he didn’t hold back and I got my share of cake in the face!

I love to dance and this picture is such a great embodiment of the fun times we have when I can get Ryan out on the floor. He was having such a great time!

Ryan’s faves:

Zibby looks beautiful and the scenery of the hay bale is very unique. Also the sky captures how great the day was.

The sparklers look really fun in the night and it was a great send off.

For our anniversary, we are headed to Nantucket!  Ryan will get a chance to play some golf, we’ll go lay on the beaches do a little sightseeing and spend some time in town.  We’re looking forward to getting away from our busy jobs and enjoying some quality time together!

Congratulations, you two!

Happy anniversary: Sheryl & David

It was so nice reconnecting with near-pro golfers Sheryl & David, whose wedding we shot at The Homestead one year ago today. They told us of their favorite moments from their celebration, held on a mild Virginia day with amazingly low humidity. Here’s what they had to say…

Sheryl’s faves:

Whenever we come to the Homestead we always start our mornings at the golf school with the pro. We loved having some of our first photos up here.

My dad had picked this beautiful father daughter dance. This photo I thought captured how happy I was and how much I love my dad. (Cheesy, but true!)

Love the impromptu moment of sneaking into the theatre and jumping onstage.

David’s faves:

Having started with a group golf lesson at 7:30 in the morning, followed by 18 holes of (walking) golf on the Cascades with friends, I was really, really, tired by the time this photo was taken!

I love this photo of Sheryl getting ready for the ceremony.  The way her head is positioned and her smile is absolutely beautiful.

Joint faves:

Classic kiss the bride shot framed by the smiling priest.

We couldn’t help but love this. Playful and just plain fun.

This is us on the way to the reception. We thought it captured how much fun we were having.

Congratulations, you two!

Happy anniversary: Cristin & Nima

Happy anniversary: Cristin & Nima

While we love our Colorado breweries, we totally dig wineries, particularly those among the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains back in Virginia where we once lived and where Cristin & Nima married one year ago. We’ve seen them since, both here in sunny Colorado as well as just running into one another at a restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, where we were dining with friends. Small world, right? So it was nice reconnecting to ask about their favorite moments from their wedding day. Here’s what they had to say.

Their joint faves:

The first one really captures how excited and genuinely pumped we were to be getting married. After being engaged for more than a year and looking forward to starting married life together, our wedding really felt like an occasion to high five and celebrate! The second one is a favorite because it captures one of our favorites moments from the evening. The wish lanterns were so special and it was great to have all of our guests surrounding us as the lanterns lifted off.

Cristin’s faves:

Another first look picture! Looking at this image brings back the same feelings from a year ago. I remember how genuinely excited I was to be able to hug Nima after waiting all day and this picture captures it perfectly.

I absolutely love this picture because the first look was such a special part of the day. I was so excited to see Nima and this picture really captures the moments of peace we had to enjoy with each other before everything started. I love that it is a candid shot with the Veritas scenery!

Nima’s faves:

I love how both of these capture super happy moments from a distance.

Congratulations, you two!

Happy Anniversary: Lindsay & Charles

Happy Monday! ’tis the season for starting to celebrate anniversaries with our clients, and today’s is Lindsay & Charles, who married at the always-stylish Hotel Monaco in Washington, DC. We touched base to see how things have been for them over the past year and discover what their favorite moments from their wedding day was. Here’s what they had to say:

Mine (lindsay) [favorites] are the fountain and fixing charles’ bowtie. The fountain truly captures our desire for a “DC wedding” and I just think the bowtie is a very intimate, quiet moment on a very busy day. Charles’ are me looking out the window because really it’s just a stunning image and him looking at me because it’s very sweet. And collectively we love the first look and ketubah signing because it was how we started our wedding day together and how we celebrated with our families (who were obviously so happy too!)

As far as our lives… well our year in pensacola is almost up. I have become a very active animal rescuer and have fostered and found homes for 12 dogs since we’ve lived here. We also “foster failed” and adopted one, mia. Charles has been hired into a dream position in long island and will finally be done with his training and start his career as an orthopedic surgeon in august.

Congratulations, you two!
