Elizabeth & Ryan’s Wedding at Woodbury School

Elizabeth & Ryan’s Wedding at Woodbury School

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to highlight one of our wonderful couples and their wedding. Today is Elizabeth (“Zibby”) and Ryan’s turn, whose wedding  we enjoyed along with their closest friends and family, at a place near to Zibby’s heart, Woodbury School. It’s where she grew up, the daughter of school faculty, and where the two of them met as teenagers. Enjoy all these great moments captured throughout the day, and then look through their complete gallery. The password is Elizabeth’s maiden name and is case-sensitive.

Dear e&r,

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding day include:

That look of utter bliss on your face, Zibby, as you held hands and read the letter from Ryan just before your ceremony. The look of pride on your mom’s face, Ryan, as she helped put your cufflinks on and watching your dad assist with your tie to get just the right knot. The moment you shared with your sister, Zibby, just before joining your parents to walk down the aisle. It reflected years of tight sisterhood and untold stories. Your three flower girls! It seemed like every time we turned around one or more of them were exuding extreme cuteness. Those tight hugs you got from your grandparents right after the ceremony. The smiles on their faces went on for miles. Your tenderness, except for that bout of playfulness during your cake cutting. The video slideshow of the two of you growing up as you danced with your respective parents.

Congratulations, you two!

Joy & Jerry atop Vail Mountain’s Wedding Deck

Joy & Jerry atop Vail Mountain’s Wedding Deck

Those of you who live in or near the Rockies know weather can be, well, a bit fickle. Such was the case with Joy and Jerry, who celebrated their vows once more (first and second times here on the same day) atop Vail Mountain, where Jerry spent some time way back when. The original time for their intimate (just the two of them and their officiant) was set for 2pm, but Jerry was concerned about the near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, so the decision was made to shift to 11am. Well, you can see the results below, but at least his choice in bride was clearly an excellent one. 🙂 During their short ceremony the temperature topped out at a gusty 46 degrees. In August. Not only did Bill have to purchase a last minute fleece pullover, Joy found a sweater to go over her sleeveless dress. Hmm…perhaps the mountain resorts are in cahoots with Mother Nature!

We were lucky enough to be able to let the storm pass with steaming cups of coffee and pictures around Vail Village and then head back up the mountain for some additional portraits with the two of them when the sun came out later that afternoon. Their ceremony was further evidence that a wedding may last only one day, but the marriage is long lasting. Even when it’s briefly interrupted, as was the case here, the base friendship and love survived, and the two of them are back together again. We’re so happy about that and really enjoyed seeing them again.

Their vows opened with a few minutes of meditation led by their wonderful officiant Tara van Dernoot

Dear j&j,

What kismet, that we would find ourselves in our new adopted hometown of Boulder, Colorado just a few weeks before your re-marriage ceremony atop beautiful Vail mountain. Despite the chill, Joy, you were literally radiating, well, joy and Jerry, you looked so happy and healthy. We can’t tell you how happy we are for you both, that you’ve found your way back to each other, stronger and more in love than ever.  It may be cliche, but perhaps love really does conquer all.

Love you guys!

Dear t&a (or a&t depending on who you talk to),

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding day include:

Your flash mob dance, which surprised and delighted every single person watching and started off with the Harlem Shake. The quiet, yet fun moments before the ceremony between Tammy and Amelie. Amelie’s perfect rehearsal of her welcome to your ceremony, followed by a solid case of…nerves? That every time we looked at you both, you were so completely comfortable with one another, smiles on your faces. The look, Tammy, of utter contentedness on your face as you gazed at your dad, nervously looking forward, just before your processional. Andrew, the nervousness and confidence Tammy was for you, all rolled into one, as she walked through the Mill’s doorway toward you, minutes from becoming your wife.  Knowing yourselves well enough to design your own ceremony, complete with letters of advice and love from your wedding party.

Congratulations, you two!

Brooke & Phill’s Wedding at the National Museum for Women in the Arts

We’re happy to share with you today the big wedding celebration of Brooke & Phill, who enjoyed a personalized ceremony at the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in downtown Washington, DC. It was so nice seeing them and celebrating with them again after getting together for food & drink a couple of months prior at Pippin Hill Farm. It was so nice too working with our friend Jessica Brown (we adore the entire Simply Chic Events team) who pulled off this beautiful and fun wedding seemingly effortlessly (although we definitely know better). It was hard narrowing down our absolute favorites from the day there were so many great moments, but somehow we managed. 😉 Enjoy! Dear b&p,

Some of our favorite moments from your day include:

When your parents got so excited for you they couldn’t wait to rush down the aisle after you to celebrate with you, leaving the wedding party at the altar in paused bemusement. Your nephews holding it together the best they could, and really performing admirably when it counted. That you called each other on the phone as you opened each others’ wedding gifts. Almost. Your bagpiper who led your guests across busy New York Avenue and H St., as if he were a mama duck followed by dozens of ducklings eager for cocktail hour. That way you paused and looked at each other as you recessed down the aisle. We don’t know what you were thinking, but we’re pretty sure it was something along the lines of, “We did it!”

Congratulations!

Just how heartfelt and even tearful the toasts to you were, and how they described you as a couple to a T. The gentle comfort of your relationship and how you interacted with one another. The dance you shared with William, the Homestead’s maitre’d, Sheryl, in recognition of him “calling it first” with your wedding, even years ago. The tender and emotional moment when your dad saw you for the first time in your wedding gown, Sheryl. The understated humor you all showed when signing your marriage license. And of course, hitting golf balls in your wedding attire.

We’re absolutely thrilled for you both and wish you much joy and happiness. Congratulations!

Dear s&j,

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding day include:
Sarah, it seemed your dad and Jason coordinated their thoughts and actions when your dad tripped up a bit over your vail, then when Jason did the same thing as you two walked up to the tower immediately after your ceremony. The way, with champagne in hand, you were completely unperturbed by the rainfall just before your ceremony. Your first dance! That was some serious energy and fun there, with many surprises for your guests. The stories your siblings shared about the two of you over the years were uproariously funny and at times very poignant. Wee ones dancing together, with the occasional stolen kiss (or at least attempted). A capella, Sarah. And that’s all we’re going to say about that. 😉

Each of our clients’ weddings have a distinct feeling to them. It’s the bond that connects those loved ones–family and friends–with each couple. Healy & Tim had a distinct feeling to theirs as well and if we had to come up with select descriptive keywords, we might say relaxed, bright, and Maker’s Mark. The easy-going, nothing’s-going-to-bother-us attitude throughout the day. Your stylist’s t-shirt (and your grandma, too, natch)! When your ring-bearer approached one of your guests during the processional and presented her with the ring pillow, instead. The childhood excitement on the faces of your friends as they all watched the fireworks display. All the love-inspired signs placed throughout the tent, serving as thoughtful reminders for your friends’ own relationships. And finally, your guests really showing the playground spirit of sharing with that bottle of Maker’s.

Congratulations, you two!

Dear l&k,

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding include…

Kyle, the way you looked and grinned at Lindsay as she walked down the aisle as if it were the first time seeing her. Lindsay, the way you hugged your dad tight and held on after his warm and touching toast to you both. James running, almost toward you, Lindsay, but instead right to his mom, and yet you still held out your arms…and your hope. Your bridesmaids doing a little spontaneous jig during portraits at the park. Your giddiness at the altar, when you thought no one was looking. And yes, even one of your guests attempting to light a sparkler held in his mouth.

Congratulations, you two!

Dear c&n,

A few of our favorite moments from before, during and after your wedding:

Getting to know you both over wine at a coffeeshop. This made total sense to all of us so it was clearly meant to be. Your tendency to high-five anything that was truly righteous. This was done quite often. The adoring way Nima would gaze at you, Cristin. Again, quite often. The way you giggled, Cristin, when Nima suggested posing with your “Too Late Now!” sign. It clearly is the most preposterous thing ever written in this case. Nima, you “tasting” Cristin’s flowers, just in case. Cristin, the way you held your dress in your hands in quiet contemplation while sitting on the sofa, minutes from putting it on. Your attitude of “let’s see if this thing works” during the Chinese candle lighting. Your dad’s welcome toast showing just how much you meant to him, Cristin, with tears in his eyes. Your sweet notes after your wedding and even during your honeymoon to share how much you were loving the sneak peeks. When you lamented the only thing you were sad about was that we no longer had as much reason to talk. Perish the thought. We expect to see you in our new sunny Colorado and hopefully, often.

Thank you for your trust and love, c&n. Congratulations!

Lindsay & Charles Wedding at Sixth & I Synagogue and Hotel Monaco

Lindsay & Charles Wedding at Sixth & I Synagogue and Hotel Monaco

One of the best things about documenting a wedding is bearing witness to one of the most celebrated family celebrations a couple will experience. That experience we’re given is something special that we truly cherish and to be honest, we’re sometimes a little surprised that it still gets us even ten years in. While yes, we’ve photographed hundreds of weddings since our humble beginnings in 2002, the memories of our clients and their families are as unique as the couples themselves. There may be traditions common to many weddings, but the way each couple embraces them makes them unique and will stay in our memory that way. Like each couple, we’ll look at a photo from a wedding and remember the feeling in the room that day (as well as what we were thinking at that particular moment). Every once in a while we may tear up looking at a particular image from years ago. Such is the wonderful emotions we get to capture on behalf of our clients. Clients like the delightful Lindsay and Charles, who celebrated their nuptials with their tight-knit families in Washington DC at the gorgeous Sixth & I Synagogue followed by a total dancefest at Hotel Monaco just a few blocks away. Check out some of our favorite images from the day, and then you can view their complete gallery here. The password is Lindsay’s maiden name and is case-sensitive.

L&C, here are a few of our favorite moments from your wedding:

Your dad’s fluency in Portugese, Lindsay, as he welcomed your family and friends to your reception. The way your cake topper clutched that MacBook Pro as if that was your life (good thing you don’t use a Dell). The fist pump in the air as your rabbi announced you married! The wide variety of crowd reactions as you walked hand-in-hand through the throngs in Chinatown from the synagogue to Monaco. The uproarious laughter, especially during your brothers’ toasts. Your dedication in getting that bow tie tied, Lindsay, even if you couldn’t see what you were doing! The way your parents stood together, with your dad’s arm around your mom’s shoulders, listening to the string quartet when the synagogue was still otherwise empty. The gentle way you held your heads together, as if you were momentarily one person. And yes, the dancing.

Thank you for your trust in us, l&c and Mazel Tov!

Here are a few of our favorite moments from your wedding:

The look your niece gave you as she watched you put on your tie, Mike. How Coty “presented” your shoes to you for donning, Jenn. The way, when you first saw each other, you each held your arms out identically for the other. Watching each of your moms laugh together outside the chapel just prior to your ceremony. How your dad, Mike, watched with tears in his eyes as you met your bride at the altar. Your grins! How the late afternoon light fell on and around you as you walked to your cottage for the first time as husband and wife. The unending smile on your dad’s face, Jenn, as he watched your husband toast you. The sheer and touching determination your dad showed during his toast, Mike. The way you held Mike’s face in your hands while dancing later that night, Jenn, as if to wordlessly say, “We did it!”

Indeed you did. And we were sooooo happy to have been a part of it all. Thank you and congratulations, you two!

Big congrats to Evan & Ashleigh, and to Emily & Scott! Both couples had moments captured at their weddings that were tops in our most recent International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers contest! We’re so grateful for the two of you for giving us the opportunity to document these small moments that mean so much to each of you.

Shay & Travis’s Wedding at Veritas Vineyards

Shay & Travis’s Wedding at Veritas Vineyards

Happy Day-After Valentine’s Day everyone! (That’s totally a holiday too, right?) Well, either way, we have the last of our 2012 weddings to share with you today. We had previously shot Shay & Travis’s engagement session this past Summer and had smiles on our faces each time we thought about their wedding. We’re sad now that it’s over, but boy do we have some great memories of it thanks, natch, to some great moments captured. And, of course, just look at these two! They totally brought the heat on a freezing cold (& super windy!) Winter’s day. Have fun looking through our favorites and don’t miss their complete wedding gallery. You know you’re dying to see it. Trust us, it’ll make the weekend come faster. 😉

And we just had to take a quick moment to thank each and everyone of our 2012 couples. We could not have asked for better clients. Seriously. We love you all from the bottom of our (a&b) heart. 😉 As we head into our tenth (!?!) year now capturing the best moments from our couples, we still have to pinch ourselves that this all hasn’t been a fantastical dream. Thank you for letting us follow our passion for capturing yours. :-*

Last, but not least, to the fabulous vendors we get to “work” with. Thankfully, you don’t make it feel like work at all. While there are way to many of you to list here, we hope you know who you are. We cannot tell you how much we appreciate your trust, your professionalism and your passion for helping create dreams come true for our mutual couples. There’s a reason why the term “dream team” exists and we’re incredibly lucky to be a part of one so often. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Details, details:

Dear s&t,

Passion. If there was a single thread running through your entire wedding day, it was the passion between the two of you. We first saw it of course when shooting your engagement portraits, and during your wedding you demonstrated it so clearly not only for each other but for life itself. It was revealed in its tenderness when Travis clasped the two ends of your necklace together, Shay, right after the two of you saw each other for the first time that day. It was evident when, during your processional, you could not take your eyes off of each other. And certainly it was present in abundance during your first dance (and, well, all of the dances afterward when the two of you were together).

Travis, when you shared that you wanted to surprise Shay with an engagement session during brief leave from her military service in Afganistan, we could barely wait! We’re so thankful we didn’t let the beans out of the bag! What an incredibly sweet and thoughtful gesture. We were so impressed that you took on most of the planning duties with Jennifer, too–it was clear that you knew your bride very well. Shay, thank you so much for your service to our country. We know it could not have been easy to have spent so much time apart from each other, but your joie de vivre helped ensure that you never lost sight of the big picture. Travis, your smile can almost literally light up a room and Shay, your laugh is totally infectious! And we loved that you quoted The Color Purple before you and your new husband walked down the aisle, “I’s married now!”, much to your guests delight.

Seeing you desiring to be so close to one another, to be in nearly constant contact with one another, showed the incredible love you have for one another and just made us smile that night. More than once. We’re so grateful to have been there to document your celebration for you. Thank you so much and we’re so excited for you both!
