Tricia & Ian’s Boulder Foothills Engagement Session

Tricia & Ian’s Boulder Foothills Engagement Session

One of the best parts about living in Boulder is when you get up early, you’re awarded with sundrenched foothills at the base of the Rocky Mountains. So it seemed apropos to meet up with Tricia & Ian for their engagement session down by the Homestead Trail just south of Boulder. It was a wonderfully cool morning in early August and afterward a healthy, but not too healthy hike, we headed down to Golden to meet up with their horse, Bear. Beautiful. Just a gorgeous and friendly horse.

We loved spending the morning with all of them and cannot wait for their wedding next October back in Virginia! We’ll let the scenery speak for itself, although T&I almost upstaged it. Don’t believe us? See for yourselves below. Below are just a few of our favorite images from their engagement portraits – it was so hard to narrow them down. Want more? See their complete gallery here. The password is Tricia’s maiden name.

Cattleya & Chris’s Wedding at Virginia’s Rust Manor House

Cattleya & Chris’s Wedding at Virginia’s Rust Manor House

Even though Cattleya & Chris’s wedding was held on the July 4 holiday, no extra fireworks were needed for this fun-loving, sweet and motorcycle-riding couple. Theirs was a very family-centric, intimate event and they even had a close friend serve as officiant. While there was a little rain earlier in the day, it merely sprinkled a bit during their first look, and after just a few clouds during the ceremony, the sun made a glorious appearance in the misty haze just in time for some beautiful portraits around the historic manor’s grounds. Lather that evening, it was fun hanging out with all the kids (and kid-thinking adults) getting their fill on some late night Summer s’mores. Yum! All in all, we can’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the Fourth.

Check out a few of our favorite moments and details below, then check out their full gallery. The password is Cattleya’s maiden name and is case-sensitive. Bonus points for correct spelling.

Wedding cake with Pinky & the Brain

Dear c&c,

Some of the moments we truly loved during your wedding include: How calm you both were while it was raining during your getting ready, as if there was nary a care in the world (there really wasn’t). Your cake toppers representing your nicknames for each other. (Although we can’t remember who was Pinky and who was the Brain.) Cat, when you finished getting dressed, that look of utter love your mom had on her face. Your “rain? what rain?” feeling you had during your first look. Including your grandma in the ceremony via FaceTime (we think she had a pretty good view)! Chris, your wedding ring designed to look like motorcycle tread. The huge smiles of, “We did it!” right after you kissed as your guests applauded. Pinky reaching in vain for the Brain, as it tumbled over the side of the cake after your cake cutting. And not technically a moment, but man, choosing between all those amazing homemade cakes, pies and S’mores was really, really hard. (Had to go for the S’mores in case you were wondering. Wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without them!)

Congratulations, you two and we wish you many, many fun loving Fourths in the future!

Happy 2015 from Holland Photo Arts!

Happy 2015 from Holland Photo Arts!

Happy, happy new year!! We hope you’ve all recovered from your celebrating and are looking forward to an amazing 2015! We celebrated in true Holland fashion–on the couch, in our PJ’s chuckling over Kathy Griffin dying Anderson Cooper’s hair. Of course, we also had to enjoy a little champagne (Does the new year really happen if no champagne is involved? We don’t think so but aren’t willing to find out), homemade kettle corn and this year, some truly decadent Gooey Butter Cake.

Seriously–if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of this delicious concoction, you simply must. It’s worth making from scratch (no yellow cake mix, Paula Deen!). Anne used this one from Smitten Kitchen and it turned out wonderfully. Take it from Bill and his happy tummy. Or if you’re in the Denver metro area, get your behinds over to Sassafras American Eatery. While we only have one in-kitchen attempt under our belts, we have to admit their version knocks it out the park and is definitely something to aspire to. If you’re not in the Denver metro area, well, you wanted to come visit us in Boulder anyway, right? Happy hour’s on us! (If you follow us on Instagram, you saw that we got each other the same book for Christmas. The SAME book! And of course, it’s about food. If you don’t follow us on Instagram, do consider it. It’s divine!)

Even though we’re having a little trouble believing it’s already 2015 when New Year’s 2014 only feels like a few months ago, we’re excited for the new start and the known–and unknown–adventures yet to come. We know we’ve said it before, but we continue to be amazed, grateful, and sure occasionally overwhelmed, that we get to photograph couples starting their marriage adventure. In 2014 we racked up another 25k frequent flier miles (hello, vacation miles!) and photographed couples saying I Do (getting married) or saying I Will (getting engaged) in New York, North Carolina, Washington DC, Virginia, and of course, our beautiful home of Colorado. Twenty fifteen already holds similar promise and we couldn’t be more hapy.

Thank you to all of our fabulous couples–past, present and future! We know we wouldn’t be here without you and the fact that we get to continue to be welcomed into your lives, at such an intimately personal time in your lives, well, we just get all sniffly thinking about how lucky we are (although we probably shouldn’t be writing this while chopping an onion). The lifelong friendships we’ve made in shooting 350+ weddings were somewhat unexpected, but truly cherished.

On to the pictures! We had so much fun coming with a 2014 New Year’s card design and wanted to share it with you as we do each year. In fact, we gathered all of the ones we’ve done since 2005 and put them in this one post. We love seeing all the years together and hope you enjoy seeing what we’ve been up to, as well. Big hugs and thanks to the fantabulous (that is seriously a word!) duo of Heather and Dani over at rock, paper, scissors in Charlottesville. We continue to be blown away by their talent and highly recommend them for any custom work, including, hint, hint…wedding invitations!

PS – Check out this space in the coming weeks to see some of our absolute favorite moments and couples captured while they were getting lost in 2014.

It’s hard to see online, but these were letterpressed on 110# paper in copper foil, as well as having some debossed bubbles, which is what the gray circles are and fit in lovely #10 size teal envelopes. Anne came up with the idea of having our years’ adventures form the shape of a champagne bottle, we both wrote down some 2014 highlights and RPS made it happen. Photo is an Instagram (seriously, you should follow us) from Anne’s birthday in Winter Park, Colorado. We then had them printed locally in Denver through Flaming Hot Foil. Huge thank you to all these talented folks. We love them!

Happy Anniversary: Kaitlyn & Mark’s Wedding at Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC

Fall is a popular time for weddings and 2013 was no different so we have another fun anniversary to share with you today! We’re thrilled to help celebrate Kaitlyn & Mark’s first anniversary with them and were thrilled to see some of their favorite moments that we captured from their truly stunning DC wedding. HUGE thank you again to the fabulous and extremely talented ladies at Evoke who helped make this such a fantastic and wonderfully memorable day for all involved!

Here are a few of our favorites from the wedding.  It’s hard to believe it has been a year.  Thank you again for taking the great pictures.  It has been a great year and very busy. We are keeping it simple for our first anniversary and going to a nice dinner in DC.  We just bought a house in Raleigh, NC and are in the process of packing and moving so we thought this weekend would be a good break.

Lisa & Elaine’s Wedding at North Carolina’s Umstead Resort

Lisa & Elaine’s Wedding at North Carolina’s Umstead Resort

Holland Photo Arts is built on relationships and always has been. We were glad to recently hear from former client Lisa, whose wedding to Dee Dee we photographed in 2003 (Dee Dee unfortunately passed away some years later). Lisa had since found love again with Elaine, were now marrying, and oh, would we be available to fly to North Carolina to document her wedding? In five weeks? We were so grateful to be available, get to see Lisa again, meet Elaine and of course, their children –two girls and a boy between them! Their wedding party (many who had amazing memories of the last time we all gathered together those many years ago), made up of dear, longtime friends were especially ready to party and celebrate these two dear souls.

We get to return East for a good number of weddings, and loved how at this wedding, it was all about families (despite a rather large 300-count) guest list, with 71 kids. Wow. And the celebration reflected their influence. So. Much. Fun.

Please enjoy some of our favorite moments from the day below, then visit their gallery to see their complete wedding. The password is Lisa’s last name and is case sensitive.

Dear l&e,

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding celebration include:

Sharing a quiet moment, just the two of you, a few moments before walking down the aisle. But…but before getting Cooper “in the mood” to lead the way. All the shenanigans with your wedding party before and after your ceremony. They were like kids, as if you didn’t quite have enough there. Mason, trying in vain, to get Cooper to calm down and “behave like an adult” during family portraits. Lily donning her flower basket atop her head and balancing across the stone walkway. Privately enjoying a sip of whiskey for the first time, Elaine, with your new wife. That hug…when Dee Dee’s dad tightly embraced you both, it sent shivers down our spines. The looks of anticipation on all those kids’ faces as you cut the cake, almost as if they were expressing, “Hurry up, already!” The gentleness with which you each treated each other all night (except that raucous moment on stage with you both, heehee), showing everyone around just how much you loved one another.

Congratulations, you two!

xoxo…
