Your first sight, and Marc’s look on his face and his excited smile when he saw you for the first time, Sara. When that scavenger hunt team descended on you and your wedding party in Lafayette Park, delighted to have found a bride to propose to. The oh-look-at-that expressions on the faces of your bridal party seeing your wedding band join your engagement ring just after your ceremony. Your dad’s touching toast, prompting a few tears. Marc’s insistence of that tiny little piece of wedding cake fed to him be followed by a self-served, nearly airborne, gigantic piece. Air guitar. And lots of it.

Laura & Gavin’s Wedding at Lionscrest Manor in Lyons, Colorado

When we first moved to Boulder we worked closely with our realtor Chad St. Onge and his awesome team, one of whom is the wonderful Laura. She and Gavin were engaged in Europe shortly before we moved out here and we were so excited when they wanted to talk with us about shooting their wedding up in Lyons, just a short drive outside of Boulder. We all hit it off and the only thing we were bummed about is that Summer 2014 seemed so far away at the time!

You might remember hers and Gavin’s Boulder engagement session from a couple of months ago and their wedding was done in true Colorado fashion. Just look at that view! As you’ll see their nieces and nephews enjoyed running around the grounds, as well.

Some of our favorite moments while photographing your wedding include:
Gavin, your arrival at Lyonscrest Manor with your groomsmen was among the most celebratory we’ve ever seen. Joyous, fun, tight with your guys. It was awesome. That mischievous grin on your face, Laura, as you approached Gavin during your first sight. For each of you, when your respective moms saw you dressed for the ceremony that day, they had the most loving, caring, adoring looks on their faces. Your maid of honor’s assertion, holding up her iPhone, that she was being a true Boulder-ite by going paperless with her toast, ha! The semblance of comity (just a semblance) during your cake cutting. You knew you had to do it.

Ingrid & Oscar’s Wedding at Middleburg’s Salamander Resort

If you haven’t yet visited the Salamander Resort in Middleburg, when you go you’ll see vast expanses of horse trails in keeping with Middleburg’s tradition. Given Ingrid & Oscar both embedded their families’ traditions (Sweden and Netherlands, respectively) into their wedding celebration, it seemed a fitting place for the two of them to say I Do. Included too were so many adorable children we almost (almost!) had to remind ourselves to photograph the couple. Ingrid made it easy with her dress, veil and headpiece (all designed by her!) and looked absolutely radiant throughout their entire day. Some of our favorite moments from your wedding day include:
Your children, nieces, and nephews. They couldn’t have been more fun, more true, and more kid-like. We loved the energy and emotions they brought to the day. The too-many-to-mention tender moments between you, Ingrid, and your sister and your mom. Your sister’s belting it out not only at your ceremony, but repeatedly at your reception, to the crowd’s roar of approval. The look of “Ok, I’m goin’ down!” on your face as your groomsmen slightly lost control of you in the air, Oscar, yet you kept that ever-present grin. Oscar, your toast of recognition to Ingrid’s father. There was nary a dry eye in the house.

Kate & Andrew’s Wedding at Clifton Inn

When we lived in Charlottesville and our newly engaged then-assistant Eric asked us where in town we’d marry if we were to do it again, we offered Clifton Inn, a place (and people) we adore. So it was nice to once again return for Kate & Andrew’s wedding (you might remember their fun Love Session in Georgetown) and celebrate with their welcoming families. It coincided with the last race of the Triple Crown, and the couple was surrounded by enthusiastic fans to watch as the last part of cocktail hour faded in the golden afternoon light. While their favorite horse may not have won, these two most definitely did with the heartfelt and tender toasts offered by their friends and family that evening. Some of our favorite moments from your wedding day include:
Watching utter joy as the two of you saw each other for the first time in private that day, taking each other in without a care in the world. Just as you reached the altar, Kate, the look of true love and amazement in your dad’s eyes as he watched you just beaming in front of Andrew. The flowers you each presented to your mothers during the ceremony, not for the flowers’ sake, but for what they represented. The way you, Andrew, and every other man wearing a suit at your ceremony heroically fended off the hot Virginia sun, ignoring the weather completely to focus on your wife-to-be. The surprise, then determination, then triumph you felt, Kate, when you finally got Andrew’s ring on his finger! The intoxicating smell of lavender when you ran through your guests gleefully tossing it on you after your ceremony. Your Mother’s beautiful and heartfelt toast, Andrew. While we don’t remember the words, we won’t soon forget the feeling we had listening to it. The golden butterfly that crashed your cocktail hour. When your dad, Kate, spoke during his toast of the first time he and Andrew talked, and of the long awkward silence (so funny!) At the very end of the night, Kate while your parents slow danced under the stars and you looked over with admiration, hope and love.

Alison & Jasper’s Brunch Wedding at Farmington Country Club

Our first Summer wedding had us back in Charlottesville for a sunny brunch wedding for Alison & Jasper, who married close to Alison’s childhood home. These two were an incredibly gentle and quiet couple, and had decided to host their guests for a brunch along the lawn at Farmington Country Club. Many guests played the myriad lawn games, especially croquet, to wear off the abundant brunch buffet (including, of course, Oreo cookies). It was a fun, relaxed way to start the spring season, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have been part of the celebration. Getting nearly everyone to play croquet despite the 90 degree heat and classic Virginia humidity. Jasper, that look on your face when you saw Alison for the first time in her pink wedding dress during your First Sight. Loved it!

Julie & Michael’s Wedding at Congressional Cemetery

It’s the start of the wedding season, and it was so cool beginning things with a long-time former co-worker of Bill’s. Julie reached out to us this winter with the wonderful news of hers and Michael’s engagement, so we were doubly happy to return to the DC area to capture their laid-back wedding day. One of the things they did which we love is they both met and welcomed their guests as they arrived at the Congressional Cemetery chapel prior to the ceremony. (She also walked down the aisle with her sister!) It gave the whole affair an easy-going start to the day and really set the mood for the evening’s festivities, held at Firefly Restaurant. And, it could not have been a more gorgeous Spring day.

You could feel the moment blocks away of you two seeing each other for the first time that day on your front stoop. Your high-five with your sister just before getting dressed, Julie. The huge grins on your faces as you greeted your arriving guests prior to your ceremony. That look, Michael, you had on your face just as Julie appeared in the chapel’s doorway, ready to walk down the aisle. Holding on to Michael’s arm so tightly as you recessed following the ceremony, Julie, as if to say, “Never apart.” While not technically a moment, the perfect weather–loved it! And finally, the toasters. Wow. The toasters. We had no idea, Michael.

Annie & Adam’s Wedding at Devil’s Thumb Ranch

Weddings

You may have remembered the floods that ravaged Colorado last year (it got press as far away as Scotland). A lot of people were displaced, and several had their homes demolished. Houses weren’t the only thing swept away; venues, many with weddings scheduled for that weekend, were also severely damaged. Annie & Adam’s original choice for their wedding was one of those affected. But thanks to a Facebook group, Save My Colorado Wedding, many of these couples found alternate venues, usually changing their wedding date in the process.

We were delighted to assist a good friend, Liesl, as A&A changed their date to one for which Liesl was already commissioned. So we stepped into shoot the weekend’s festivities at the beautifully rustic Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. A&A were such a relaxed, happy couple, and we couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2014. Here are a few of our favorite moments from the day, and we hope you enjoy!

Your bridesmaids trying out their new opera gloves & shades, with champagne in hand. How emotional you were with your respective moms just after you saw each other for the first time that day. “Victory” in the air when one of your groomsmen successfully collected all the bridesmaids purses. The way your mom peeked around the door at you and your dad, Ashley, just before walking down the aisle. Sneaking a peek at your newly installed rings during your ceremony. How your entire wedding party embraced your Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme while entering your reception. Party, party, party, wow your dance floor was packed all night! That look of utter bliss on your face, Zibby, as you held hands and read the letter from Ryan just before your ceremony. The look of pride on your mom’s face, Ryan, as she helped put your cufflinks on and watching your dad assist with your tie to get just the right knot. The moment you shared with your sister, Zibby, just before joining your parents to walk down the aisle. It reflected years of tight sisterhood and untold stories. Your three flower girls! It seemed like every time we turned around one or more of them were exuding extreme cuteness. Those tight hugs you got from your grandparents right after the ceremony. The smiles on their faces went on for miles. Your tenderness, except for that bout of playfulness during your cake cutting. Brooke & Phill’s Wedding at the National Museum for Women in the Arts

We’re happy to share with you today the big wedding celebration of Brooke & Phill, who enjoyed a personalized ceremony at the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in downtown Washington, DC. It was so nice seeing them and celebrating with them again after getting together for food & drink a couple of months prior at Pippin Hill Farm. It was so nice too working with our friend Jessica Brown (we adore the entire Simply Chic Events team) who pulled off this beautiful and fun wedding seemingly effortlessly (although we definitely know better). It was hard narrowing down our absolute favorites from the day there were so many great moments, but somehow we managed. 😉 Enjoy! When your parents got so excited for you they couldn’t wait to rush down the aisle after you to celebrate with you, leaving the wedding party at the altar in paused bemusement. Your nephews holding it together the best they could, and really performing admirably when it counted. That you called each other on the phone as you opened each others’ wedding gifts. Almost. Your bagpiper who led your guests across busy New York Avenue and H St., as if he were a mama duck followed by dozens of ducklings eager for cocktail hour. That way you paused and looked at each other as you recessed down the aisle. We don’t know what you were thinking, but we’re pretty sure it was something along the lines of, “We did it!”

Sarah & Jason’s Wedding at The Homestead

Sarah, it seemed your dad and Jason coordinated their thoughts and actions when your dad tripped up a bit over your vail, then when Jason did the same thing as you two walked up to the tower immediately after your ceremony. The way, with champagne in hand, you were completely unperturbed by the rainfall just before your ceremony. Your first dance! That was some serious energy and fun there, with many surprises for your guests. The stories your siblings shared about the two of you over the years were uproariously funny and at times very poignant. Wee ones dancing together, with the occasional stolen kiss (or at least attempted). A capella, Sarah. And that’s all we’re going to say about that. 😉

Healy & Tim’s Wedding at a Private Virginia Estate

Each of our clients’ weddings have a distinct feeling to them. It’s the bond that connects those loved ones–family and friends–with each couple. Some of our favorite moments from your wedding include…

The easy-going, nothing’s-going-to-bother-us attitude throughout the day. Your stylist’s t-shirt (and your grandma, too, natch)! When your ring-bearer approached one of your guests during the processional and presented her with the ring pillow, instead. The childhood excitement on the faces of your friends as they all watched the fireworks display. All the love-inspired signs placed throughout the tent, serving as thoughtful reminders for your friends’ own relationships. And finally, your guests really showing the playground spirit of sharing with that bottle of Maker’s.

We were pretty stoked when Stephanie Marie of The Hook and the Fete blog called to ask us to collaborate on a shoot she was planning for The Hook’s upcoming wedding issue, which just hit stands. If you’re in the Charlottesville area and would like a little inspiration for your own wedding, we think the issue turned out beautifully with a wide variety of different ideas put into play and photographed at the gorgeous Clifton Inn. We’re delighted to have been a part of it!
