Max & Sarah’s Wedding at Washington DC’s Newseum

In a funny travel irony, one of our recent Fall weddings involved a bi-coastal couple of sorts. Lucky for us, Max & Sarah are based both in Denver and Washington, DC so when they chose to marry, they knew it would be in the town where they met (DC), but chose to have their engagement photos in a town they love (Vail). They selected one of DC’s coolest and well renowned museums – the Newseum in which to say their I Do’s as the Capitol was beautifully framed, quite literally behind them. Theme: Black, White and Re(a)d all over. Their guests were also treated to a rousing thunderstorm that thankfully waited until cocktail hour to truly manifest and merely threatened their outdoor, rooftop ceremony.

This jet-setting duo’s likeableness and charisma was on full display at their roast, er…rehearsal dinner (theme: Wisconsin meets Great Britain) at the Hay Adams Hotel the night prior. Several friends offered some valuable intel on their individual personalities followed by key advice (complete with an intensive Power Point presentation!) on how to have a happy marriage with said quirky, yet highly accomplished and ambitious backgrounds. We’ve seen a trend towards roast type rehearsal dinner/celebrations and we have to say, we love it. Judging from the gathered crowd’s reactions, they did as well.

Dear m&s,

Some of our favorite moments from your wedding weekend include…
Your sisters’ toast (or should we call it training?), Sarah, complete with a 2″ binder full of the “Care and Feeding of Sarah” for Max, ostensibly to read while traveling to your honeymoon. The end of the toast, showing a picture of you at 60 holding a certain prestigious office, was priceless! Your officiant becoming the envy of music directors everywhere by getting all the guests to actually sing at a service. The story told at your rehearsal dinner, Max, exemplifying your competitiveness, at least in tennis, and probably in finance too. Holding your flower girl in your lap during toasts, precariously perched due to all the laughter (your sisters, Sarah, did an amazing job, but it was especially cool to have two upstanding British gents deliver a rousing one for Max). Your first dance kept your guests guessing and was so much fun to watch. That so-tender moment between you and your dad as you began to proceed down the aisle, Sarah, and when you got there, the emotion on your mom’s face, Max, really showed how happy these two families will now be one. Your entire weekend celebration was a wonderful reminder of the incredible meaning of our relationships with our family and those we choose as our family to surround us. Congratulations again to you both and we can’t wait to raise a beer again with you soon!

Laura & Gavin’s Wedding at Lionscrest Manor in Lyons, Colorado

When we first moved to Boulder we worked closely with our realtor Chad St. Onge and his awesome team, one of whom is the wonderful Laura. She and Gavin were engaged in Europe shortly before we moved out here and we were so excited when they wanted to talk with us about shooting their wedding up in Lyons, just a short drive outside of Boulder. We all hit it off and the only thing we were bummed about is that Summer 2014 seemed so far away at the time!

You might remember hers and Gavin’s Boulder engagement session from a couple of months ago and their wedding was done in true Colorado fashion. Just look at that view! As you’ll see their nieces and nephews enjoyed running around the grounds, as well.

Dear l&g,

Some of our favorite moments while photographing your wedding include:
Gavin, your arrival at Lyonscrest Manor with your groomsmen was among the most celebratory we’ve ever seen. Joyous, fun, tight with your guys. It was awesome. That mischievous grin on your face, Laura, as you approached Gavin during your first sight. For each of you, when your respective moms saw you dressed for the ceremony that day, they had the most loving, caring, adoring looks on their faces. Your maid of honor’s assertion, holding up her iPhone, that she was being a true Boulder-ite by going paperless with her toast, ha! The semblance of comity (just a semblance) during your cake cutting. You knew you had to do it.

Faithful readers of this journal will remember them from their early springtime Love Session, and now they’ve tied the knot in an amazingly unique ceremony (not only in the round, but officiated by their wedding party and parents!) at the always stunning Mellon Auditorium in DC and expertly planned and executed by the fantastic Sara Muchnick. So how cool is this? Misty, part of a dance troupe in college, was completely surprised by a production her friends put on for the couple. The even bigger surprise? Roby, who otherwise would not necessarily be classified as a dancer, partook in the last number of the set to the cheers of everyone and as a surprise to Misty. Totally blew her mind. Loved it!

Some of our favorite memories from your wedding weekend include:

The molecular mixologists at your rehearsal dinner (what a way to start the weekend!). Your first sight, when Roby shook his money maker (and then shook it again later that night…). That you created a unique ceremony officiated by your dearest friends, all participating in their own way. That amazing dance routine performed for you, including a surprise appearance by Roby. Yup, shaking his money maker once again. Wow, it was hard not just putting down our cameras and watching in amazement. The coordinated superhero boxers (not shown). Your laughter, especially immediately after your ceremony. Having your talented singing friends entertain the rest of your guests during cocktail hour. Misty, that you managed to get down on the dance floor despite recently injuring your feet–that was serious perseverance.

Your stolen kisses. How overcome with emotion you both became during your personal vows. Chas, the overwhelming look of pride on your dad’s face as he hugged you after your ceremony. Lauren, the broad smile on your dad’s face…all night long. Your delicious pies! Not really a moment there, but having a bite definitely was. All the boot kickin’ on the dance floor. That hug when you first saw each other that day; it was as if you’d never separate. Awesome.

Mary Beth & Chris’s Wedding at Shrine Mont

When you’re in love with not only the couple, but their families, it makes documenting the wedding day that much richer. We had known Mary Beth’s family from back when her sister married (thanks to the recommendation of Andrew & Julie) and while sadly we were already commissioned on her date we all kept in touch. When Mary Beth and Chris decided to tie the knot at a peaceful place very close to her heart, we were thrilled to be able to photograph it all for them, even without air conditioning and with a smidgen of rain. 😉 What’s a few rain drops between friends, anyway?

The way the sunrise shone straight through the early morning fog. Mary Beth, your look of intrigue when you heard your dress was “going on a field trip.” Don’t worry, it was chaperoned. Your families’ infectious energy, not just for one moment but during the entire day. The way Ann reached out and touched your arm, Chris, as Mary Beth began walking down the aisle. The kids during your ceremony (too many individual moments to note–it’d fill a small book). That you shrugged off the small amount of rain in favor of marrying at your favorite spot. That look of utter bliss on your face, Zibby, as you held hands and read the letter from Ryan just before your ceremony. The look of pride on your mom’s face, Ryan, as she helped put your cufflinks on and watching your dad assist with your tie to get just the right knot. The moment you shared with your sister, Zibby, just before joining your parents to walk down the aisle. It reflected years of tight sisterhood and untold stories. Your three flower girls! It seemed like every time we turned around one or more of them were exuding extreme cuteness. Those tight hugs you got from your grandparents right after the ceremony. The smiles on their faces went on for miles. Your tenderness, except for that bout of playfulness during your cake cutting. Each of our clients’ weddings have a distinct feeling to them. It’s the bond that connects those loved ones–family and friends–with each couple. The easy-going, nothing’s-going-to-bother-us attitude throughout the day. Your stylist’s t-shirt (and your grandma, too, natch)! When your ring-bearer approached one of your guests during the processional and presented her with the ring pillow, instead. The childhood excitement on the faces of your friends as they all watched the fireworks display. All the love-inspired signs placed throughout the tent, serving as thoughtful reminders for your friends’ own relationships. And finally, your guests really showing the playground spirit of sharing with that bottle of Maker’s.
