How We Work
Gear
Most of our recent work is captured by Canon mirrorless cameras: an R6, whose sensor has been converted to full-spectrum light (visible, plus infrared and ultraviolet); and an R6 Mark II for typical color and B&W work. We keep our lens bag reasonably light with a 16-35mm f/2.8 EF-L, 24-105mm f/4 EF-L IS, and 70-200mm f/2.8 EF-L IS lenses. We use a carbon fiber Gitzo tripod with foot spikes for better traction and carry our gear in a ThinkTank bag (and have for many, many years).
Most of our photo editing’s done on an Apple M2 Macbook Pro.
Software
- Culling: Photo Mechanic
- Basic adjustments: Adobe Lightroom Classic, used for color correction, contrast adjustments, and basic dodging and burning (lightening and darkening parts of a photo)
- Advanced editing: Adobe Photoshop CC, used if something is outside the range of Lightroom’s capabilities. While we prefer the ease and lower risk of non-destructive editing of Lightroom, there are tasks for which Photoshop is uniquely suited.
A Note on AI
Given the possibilities of using AI in the creative process today, we wanted to take a moment to address your possible concerns about its use in our studio.
Our images are always captured with a camera, never generated through AI.
While we use AI for other purposes and it’s been useful, we are of the mind that Mother Nature’s innate beauty is all that’s needed and is all we seek when we make pictures for you. For those who seek that true Earthly authenticity, we believe there’s no better approach than our environment au naturel. While AI has its place, for us it’s not here and not in creating our photographs.
