The historic century-old Idaho State Penitentiary is open to visitors as a museum, and somewhat unflinchingly examines its own history from 1870 through its 1973 closing. Its buildings’ crumbling, and in some cases, missing walls and floors hold so many stories of the incarcerated people held. Regardless of your views around the US justice system, the penitentiary is a sobering and powerful statement on humans’ ability to inflict pain on one another.
