Fence Leading to Nowhere

"Weathered wooden fence leads toward cliff edge above sandy beach, Sea Ranch California coastline in warm inviting blue tones"

There’s an isolated, peaceful place in Northern California named Sea Ranch. The community itself has a fascinating history and while the whole of its founders’ original purpose may not have lived on in perpetuity, its surrounding habitat remains largely and beautifully unperturbed.

We had the pleasure some years ago of a short stay in one of the homes overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The areas’s enveloping nature continually drew us outside for quiet walks and peaceful introspection.

This fence, discovered on one evening stroll, separates no identifiable objects or entities. It just sits there, unhurriedly decaying in place, allowing nature to do its thing. There was some original purpose for its construction, now lost to time, preceding its physical manifestation’s deterioration.

It makes one wonder how various constructions and scaffolding from our old purposes are no longer serving us, because the purpose itself has changed or no longer valid. Are we introspective enough to look beyond a belief, a process, or even a worldview to its original motivation to see if it’s still valid or is it leading us nowhere?

See this and more from California.
